Hurricane Ida may have hit Louisiana hardest, but its remnants certainly are being felt in the New York area as well. Here in Westchester and Putnam, we’re seeing a tremendous amount of flooded roads and homes, property damage, power loss and other destruction that residents now must contend with.
The process will no doubt be a challenging one. But Robison, the full-service home systems leader for over 100 years, is here to help. Following is a checklist of important items to keep in mind as you determine how to get your home restored:
- Inspect and document all damage: Take photos of everything that has been damaged as a result of the storm. You’ll need them as proof when making an insurance claim. Be sure to wear protective clothing and be mindful of standing water, which could have submerged debris or be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines. Contact your utility company immediately.
- Check for water damage: If your home experienced flooding, chances are good that you now have some level of water damage. Check to see if water has seeped behind your siding and into your insulation. Standing water can lead to the growth of mold or rot — which can affect the health of your family.
- Assess damage to the exterior of your home. During spells of hard rain and wind, your roof, siding and windows may have been compromised. Missing flashing, gutters and shingles will all need to be replaced. If you boarded up windows and doors before the storm, take care in removing them such that nails don’t go flying.
- Be careful with appliances: If you lost power and now it’s been restored, the current often momentarily surges, creating a kind of “tidal wave” of electricity to the electrical outlets in your home. This spike in voltage can create high levels of heat that can damage circuitry or even destroy your appliances. Turn on major appliances one at a time to help avoid overloading circuits.
- Check for gas leaks. If you smell gas or think there might be a leak, DO NOT turn on lights, light matches or candles, or do anything that could cause a spark. Leave your house right away. Gas leaks are considered emergencies and will get a prompt response from your utility company.
- Check if your HVAC system has flooded: Your furnace, water heater and A/C system also may have been affected by water, which can lead to corrosion. Even worse, they can become a breeding ground for mold, bacteria and other growth that can affect indoor air quality and your health.
